Things I Think I Think

I love watching the Dallas Cowboys implode. Love it. There is very little in the sporting world that I relish more than the Cowboys failing. It's a sick sick pleasure.

The fall...lets talk about how great it is. The leaves, the crisp air, football, apples, haunted pub crawls, sweaters, oktoberfests, less leg shaving...yesss.

I still haven't posted photos from Paris and I plan to, but the internet at my house is virtually nonexistent so it takes more time than I've had recently.

Tomorrow is my first day off (by "off" I mean "without travel/to-dos") in about a month. This, this is needed. Sleep, laundry, bills, etc. PJs til 2pm, catch up on those Netflix rentals, loaf.

My dear dear friend Caroline got hitched this past weekend and I wasn't able to be there (too many weddings/travel in the past month to be able to afford to go, both monetarily and vacation-time wise) and I sulked most of Saturday thinking about missing it. Thanks to Murphy who kept me posted on the happenings. Her wedding is next...

I don't remember the last time I saw a movie in the theater. I really like movies in the theater too, just haven't heard of one I thought was worth it.

Moxy Fruvous did a song called "The Drinking Song" that somehow gets me every time. No specific reason, it just does.

Sarah Palin as a Spoonerism: Parah Salin. You just think on that.

I read Sarah Vowell's The Wordy Shipmates on my trip to Europe and though it was good it wasn't as catchy as Assassination Vacation, her previous work. Part of this I attribute to assassinations being more interesting than Puritans. I do have to respect their words though; their intentions are inspirational and full of hope. I recommend it if only for how she captures the words of Winthrop, Cotton, Williams and Hutchinson and their personal brands of rightness and crazy.

SNL on Saturday: I haven't considered that show reverent in years and then this fall I've actually been excited to see what they can produce. I credit Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Seth Meyers for this. That Sarah Palin rap Amy did was astounding, especially since Amy is about 7 months pregnant and Sarah Palin was sitting there watching her pretend to cap a man in a moose outfit. Amazing.

I Wanna Know What [Danny Glover] Is

Sorry for the lack of posting lately; life is a wind-up toy with fits of extreme motion and then crippling lethargy. I stayed in Virginia an extra night to spend time with my dad and it did not disappoint; if anything it was one of the more enjoyable portions of the trip. We drank scotch and sat on the back deck and talked about goats, guns, politics and fly fishing. It may sound strange but I feel so loving and loved in those moments. It scares me how much I love my father, how much I understand him, how I know him. The idea that a part of that may die if I ever get married is something I don't want to even consider; my dad isn't just my dad he's a close friend and to lose that...well, it'd be sacrifice. Daily I am thankful for the father I have.

I finished listening to Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler on my drive back from VA and let me tell you, it is a worthwhile listen. Get this book on CD if you can; you will be crying laughing while cruise control takes you down the Interstate. Most of the drive to VA was totally lost in the book; I don't remember it being as arduous as it normally is because I was laughing the whole trip. Thanks to my co-worker for buying that for my birthday.

I got back Tuesday evening and immediately changed clothes and started to rip up flooring. I just want the flooring project to be done, I hate it weighing over my head. I hate (strong word but I mean it) half-finished projects, I want them to be complete and not in this pubescent stage in which they are settling. I burned out the motor on Andy's hammer drill so I had to buy him a new one (yay unexpected costs!) to mix the mortar but hopefully by the end of the week all the backerboard will be done and it'll be time to tile this mofo.

I wouldn't ever date an actor no matter how amazing he may be. I wouldn't trust him to be truthful (he is an actor after all) and it would kill me to see him saying loving things or kissing another woman on screen. I don't care if they are lines, it would negate whatever he'd said to me. I'm a jealous type apparently.

Scotch Whiskey + Anything Else = Awesome. Even when “Anything else” includes “Watching old SportsCenter commercials on YouTube”

So that person who came back into my life after five years of being gone? We actually spoke on the phone for the first time and it was like hearing a voice from both a haunting past and the best kind of dreams. I have literally been praying for that voice for five years and to hear it again...well...wow. It was almost to the day that my friend from college died (six years ago...blows my mind how it still stings and how I miss his voice) and it was a lot of ghosts in one phone call because of that. But it was also like an invite into a bouncing castle; I was on air for the rest of the night with thankfulness and hopefulness and joy.

Quizzo without Andrew? Blah. What a terrible idea.

I'm rereading Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell and I love how she loves US History. It makes me even more passionate about it all, and I'm already in the “pick another topic to talk about or you'll never get laid again” sorta category of American history nerdom.

Darts: Not my spiritual gift.

CRUSTY CRAB!

I wrote a post about my weekend, (which was original and amazing), but written down it was just sort of boring so I tossed it. I'm feeling repetitive and unoriginal. It's like when your father tells you the same story for the 4th time; looses its freshness. I went out with friends! Martinis! Adventure! Redskins! Woohoo! That was it. Sometimes brevity peaks out and gives the world a raspberry before it goes back into the chest where verbosity normally keeps it locked up. See? Back to too many words.

So I realized my digital camera was also in my car when it was broken into, so if you thought I didn't post enough photos before...well, now I got nuthin'. Maybe I'll start depicting everything with little dot drawings like they have in the NYT. Or draw events like they do with courtroom painters. Maybe I'll do fingerpainting, Mfers. Oh well, camera was a graduation gift from my father—I needed a new camera, but it had great sentimental value to me. Of course I'm a packrat, everything has sentimental value in my sick sick mind.

Quizzo on Monday: Amazing. Possibly the best team ever. First off I won a shout out question (correct answer: “CRUSTY CRAB!”) so I got a Jack of the Wood t-shirt. THEN by the end of the second round we were in the top 3 teams. After the speed round (we kicked ASS on that one) we were one point from first place. Final round we tied for third—just two points from the winner. For this I blame the following: Kenny Lofton, Ethopia, Friday, Blake Edwards, Road to Rio, James Earl Carter, and all the other answers we got wrong. But that is the highest we've ever finished; go us. Thanks to all who made appearances. Remember: everyone is invited to Quizzo...unless you dated one of us. I've got standards.

I finally finished Mrs. Dalloway. Only took me a good six months to get around to finishing a book that is less than 200 pages, but now I feel like I need to go back and read it quickly; to make it all make sense. That was a dense read. Recommended if one has the time to give attention to every word or phrase as if it stood alone. And really, people were surprised that Virginia Woolf committed suicide? Really? Did they bother to read it? It's like people being shocked that Sylvia Plath killed herself—did ya read The Bell Jar? That's a new list right there: Obnoxiously Obvious Holy Shits. Holy shit George Michael is GAY? Clark Kent is Superman!? Bruce Willis is dead in “The Sixth Sense”!? RuPaul is a MAN!?
