Today I was inexplicably blessed with two phone calls from friends I have not seen nor spoken to in months, but whom I hold dear in my heart (and who's opinion I hold in the highest regards). The first is one of the very first people I met in Syracuse who has proven to be such a quality (and quirky) friendship; the other is the older brother I always wanted but never knew I needed the way I did, and I love him boundlessly for it. They both have enriched my life in ways they will never fully understand, as I won't ever be able to fully express. He is the very definition of being the salt and light--he has my adoration. I am speechless as to how much that guy means to me, and how thankful I am for all that he has done (intentionally or not). She has been the voice of the creative, unique, educated and truly open-minded. She is brazen in her honesty (and sarcasm) and if I had a little bit of EGC in me, I'd be so much cooler.
On my ride home from work, I was in a retro-Indigo Girls mood (as we all are from time to time) and was singing loudly to their "Rites of Passage" album. "Let it be me" came on and I listened to the words for what seemed like the first time. "Let it be me/if the world is night, shine my life like a light." There are boundless ways to shine your life like a light: it can be missions, it can be ministry, it can be in a 4am chat on the corner of Lancaster and Euclid with a friend, it can be simply being yourself. Light is beautiful and awesome in darkness, and beauty is something that shines out your eyes--and it sure does shine.
My friends today, in their own, unassuming ways, shone on me in a way I needed but didn't yet know.
