The $50 Question

Oh Liz...you had to post that comment didn't you.
This is what I got from just scrolling through the iPod and thinking for a little bit. It's by no means comprehensive, but all of it is worth a listen. There is some jazz, some old classics, some unexpected (read the 2Pac/Elton John duet, by way of Eminem production) and a lot inbetween. I didn't get genre specific but I can if you want me to...you know how I love to make lists...

Stuff to get with an extra $50 iTunes card that's just sitting around:

  • The Shins whole album “Wincing the Night Away”
  • Much Farther to Go—Rosie Thomas feat. Denison Whitmer and Sufjan Stevens
  • The Mating Game—BitterSweet
  • Paper Moon—Erin McKeown
  • It Doesn't Matter To the Sun—Rosie Thomas
  • Ghetto Gospel—2Pac feat. Elton John
  • Hollywood—Jay-Z feat. Beyonce
  • Canned Heat—Jamiroquai
  • Wagon Wheel—OCMS
  • Come Sail Away—Styx
  • Attagirl—Bettie Serveert
  • Ohio—Damien Jurardo
  • London Calling—The Clash
  • Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)--Kenny Rodgers and First Edition
  • Lola—The Kinks
  • A Thousand Tiny Pieces—Be Good Tanyas
  • Today Has Been Okay—Emiliana Torrini
  • I Hate Everyone—Get Set Go
  • 's Wonderful—Ella Fitzgerald
  • They it's Spring—Blossom Dearie
  • Something's Gotta Give—Ella Fitzgerald
  • Beyond the Sea—Bobby Darin
  • Kiss To Build a Dream On—Louis Armstrong
  • I Won't Dance—Blossom Dearie
  • You Know I'm No Good—Amy Winehouse
  • Everyday—Buddy Holly

  • One Monkey—Gillian Welch
  • Roly Poly—The Little Willies
  • Dance Me to the End of Love--Madeline Peyroux

OCMS=Old Crow Medicine Show. They are worth a listen anyway, but this is a good starter song for them

If I were to buy a whole Rosie Thomas CD, which would you recommend?

ps-I just got the word verification wrong. That's almost as humbling as struggling with alphabetical order when you work at a library on your university campus...

Rosie Thomas wise, I'd say her more recent "If Songs Could Be Held" is a great one to own. It's got some of my favorite songs of hers on it too, like "Tomorrow", "Since You Been Around" "Pretty Dress" and "It Doesn't Matter to the Sun".
Again, I love the little EP "These Friends of Mine", the one with Denison and Sufjan, but it's available only digitally.

I got the new Patty G album yesterday and so far my favorite songs are:
"Burgundy Shoes"
(sparse, envoking childhood memories and Maine...I just like it)
"Trapeze"
(Holy Shit. And aging trapeze artist, lost love, Emmylou on backing vocals. Done and Done.)
"Heavenly Day"
(I want to hear this song while slow dancing on a brick patio under a canopy of chinese lanterns and stars)

Patty G @ Orange Peel on April 13. Tickets aren't on sale yet, but they will be soon. Who's with me?

Oh how I love my new friend! I would like to add one more song just in case some nutjob gave you a $51 gift card:
Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum

It is just the right way to start off a road trip.

Also, start to subscribe to This American Life podcast. Free amazingly funny entertainment!

I can't believe you just brought up ol' Norman Greenbaum. I think my mom had that on 8-track when I was a kid. Well, that and "The Best of the Carpenters" and "Eye of the Tiger". I'd totally get it with a $51 iTunes card. But now I am thinking of the greatest road trip mix...

And This American Life? My favorite podcast. Love it. Makes me laugh so hard or think deeply; one of my favorite authors is a regular contributor on the show. Love to drive and listen to it.
